Ready, Steady, Sow!

As the days start to get a little longer, we get off to a flying start with the sowing of our annuals and the planting up of the dahlia tubers. Many people wonder what a flower grower gets up to during the winter months, when the ground is hard and there’s little warmth from the sun. Well this winter we managed to publish our web page, start constructing the new workshop, although Dale snapping his cruciate ligament hasn’t helped (football boots well and truly hung up!!) and my favorite job of selecting and ordering this years seeds. We’ll be starting with the good old sweet peas, which I select from ‘Owl’s Acre Sweet Peas’ based in Spalding, Lincolnshire. ‘Mollie Rhilstone’, ‘Dynasty’ and ‘Cream Southbourne’ are just three of the many varieties that we’ll be growing this year. Then it will be on to the Ammi ‘Majus’, Cleome, Dill, Cornflowers, Cerinthe Major, Daucus Carota and Salvia Viridis. Given the heavy clay soil here in the Vale of Belvoir, the majority of my seeds are sown into modules and will be planted out after the last frosts. Plus I’m a bit of a stickler for straight lines…which I can achieve when planting this way!!
